Why Choose Beet Puree for Babies?

  • Nutrient-Rich: Beet puree isn’t just any baby food! It’s a nutrient powerhouse disguised in a sweet, earthy package. Beets are rich in calcium, folate, and Vitamin C which are super important for your baby’s immune system plus growth and development.
  • Mild Flavor: Beets are naturally sweet so they easily appeal to baby’s taste buds. Plus, pureed beets mix well with other baby purees so you can build a medley of different flavors.
  • Digestive Health: Beets are high in fiber which can help your baby or toddler with digestion and helps prevent constipation when your littlest ones are transitioning to solid foods.

How To Make Beet Puree

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Place beets on one side of a piece of aluminum foil or parchment paper and fold in half over the beets like a book. Pinch the edges to fully seal the package (this way they will steam in the oven while they roast).

  3. Bake for 45 minutes until fork tender.
  4. Open the foil, and let roasted beets cool until you’re able to touch them.
  5. Use a ziplock bag or gloves to cover your hands and peel the beets. This prevents your hands from getting stained. The skin should slide right off.
  6. Cut and puree beets in a food processor until smooth. Add water little by little if you need to thin out the puree.

Tips for This Recipe

  • Use red or gold beets. They both have a host of nutritional benefits, the main difference is gold beets won’t stain as much if you’re worried about that.
  • Grab a bib! It comes with the territory (but can also be kind of fun), but beets do stain and can make a mess. Pull out your biggest bib or tape a plastic garbage bag all around your baby. The potential mess is worth it though, trust me.
  • The easiest way to peel beets is to roast them with the skin on. The skin will peel right off. Wear a pair of gloves or cover your hands with a plastic bag so you can avoid staining your hands.
  • To serve Baby Led Weaning (BLW) style, roast and peel the beets and allow them to cool. Then cut into thin, long pieces about the width of two fingers and serve.
  • Steam the greens and add them to your dinner when you make this beet puree for your baby. This way nothing goes to waste!
