Let’s chat how to take this dip from just “regular ole” to spooky 5-Layer Dip! It’s all in the arachnids, friends! After layering all of your main ingredients you get to be creative – we use a piping of sour cream and a couple of large black olives to create our web and spiders, and BAM, there you have it: SPOOKY!

Looking for more festive Halloween recipes? We’ve got you. We think that our Pumpkin Spice Rice Krispie Treats, Dairy-Free Dirt Worm Pudding, and Witch’s Brew Cherry Pomegranate Sangria all deserve a spot at your next Halloween get-together.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s so cute – if you don’t love super creepy Halloween decor, this recipe is for you. This dip is smack dab in the middle of where cute Halloween meets spooky Halloween – it’s adorable, a little bit spooky, but definitely not creepy crawly!
  • It’s delicious – who doesn’t love a good dip recipe? Hummus, shredded cheese, pico, guacamole, sour cream, and olives come together to make this one really, really delicious.
  • It’s easy and adaptable – you can make this recipe super easy by buying store-bought guacamole, hummus, and pico, or, if you prefer, you can make your own (the best homemade guacamole, easy homemade hummus, and the perfect homemade pico).

Recipe Ingredients

If you’re going fully store-bought, this recipe calls for a handful (5, to be exact) ingredients. Find ingredient notes (including substitutions and homemade swaps) below.

  • Guacamole – a lot of grocery stores have really great close to homemade guacamole, so if you’d prefer to grab a container at the store, do that. If you want to make your own guacamole, though, this authentic guacamole recipe is our very favorite.
  • Hummus – same note as above! If you have a store-bought hummus that you really love and you want to keep things easy, get that. If you want to go homemade, this easy homemade hummus is silky smooth and really yummy.
  • Pico de Gallo – again, go store-bought if you want or make this easy homemade pico de gallo!

A full ingredient list with exact amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Recipe Variations and Modifications

  • Make it dairy-free – to make this recipe dairy-free, swap the sour cream and shredded cheese for non-dairy versions.
  • Customize it – don’t like olives? Make bell pepper spiders instead! Don’t like hummus? Use cream cheese as the base layer. Truly, this recipe is extremely customizable.
  • Add some spice – combine taco seasoning (store-bought or homemade taco seasoning) with the sour cream to give the dip a little bit of a kick!

How to Make Spooky 5-Layer Dip

The process is easy, especially if you’re buying each of the components already made. If you’re making your own guac, pico, and hummus, be sure to have those prepped and ready before assembly. Follow along below!

Step 1: In a large serving bowl, use all of your hummus to create your first layer on the bottom. Spread evenly with a spatula.

Step 2: Create your second layer by sprinkling all of your cheese on top of the hummus evenly.

Step 3: Create your third layer by spreading your pico de gallo evenly and gently on top of your cheese.

Step 4: Finish your dip layers by spreading your guacamole on top of the pico evenly and gently.

Step 5: Place the sour cream into a piping bag. (create your own piping bag by putting your sour cream into a sandwich bag and cutting the tip off of one corner). Start the web by creating a bullseye design. Pipe a dot of sour cream into the center, then pipe a ring around it, about a 1/2 inch away from the dot. Create another ring about a 1/2 inch away from the first ring, and continue in this pattern until you’ve created your bullseye design.

Step 6: Take a toothpick (or grab 3-4 together for a thicker line) and use just the tip(s) to draw lines outward from the center to the end of your bullseye design to create a webbed pattern.

Step 7: To create your spiders, take a large black olive and cut it in half length-wise (hot dog style). Then cut the other half into legs. (you’ll need 8 legs per spider!)

Step 8: Assemble your spiders wherever you’d like, then keep covered and refrigerated until ready to serve. Enjoy!

Recipe Tip

If you’ve landed on this recipe because you do want to make layer dip but you don’t necessarily want it to be spooky, skip the spider web and spiders, and instead, layer the sour cream evenly on top of the hummus (then add the cheese on top of the sour cream), and chop the olives up to sprinkle on top. VOILA! Not spooky (but still really delicious) layer dip!

How to Serve

Serve your spooky dip alongside chips and crunchy veggies (carrots and cucumbers are my favorite to dip with!).

How to Store

Your 5-layer dip will be best served on the day you make it, but if you have leftover, you can certainly store it covered in the refrigerator. The pico may release some liquid over time and the guacamole may start to brown, but the taste will still be spot-on for up to 4 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can the dip sit out at room temperature?

It’s best to serve your 5-layer dip chilled, but if it’s left out at room temperature, it’s safe for about 2 hours. After that, it’s best to pop it in the refrigerator.

What can I do if the layers become watery or separate?

Once the dip is assembled, there isn’t much you can do about watery layers (that’s why we recommend assembling on the day you plan to serve it), but to prevent this from happening, be sure to drain (or gently blot with a paper towel) watery ingredients like pico before assembling the dip.

Are there any alternatives to sour cream for the “spider web” design?

Sure! You can use Greek yogurt or a dairy-free alternative like sour cream or coconut yogurt to create the spider web design if you’d prefer.
