Yppenplatz and Brunnenmarkt (2024)

A colourful, newly fashionable district is springing up around Brunnenmarkt, a little further from the city centre, in Ottakring (16th district). The market exudes South European flair. Numerous artists have set up shop in the surrounding area, making Brunnenmarkt and nearby Yppenmarkt one of the most electric neighbourhoods in the city today. Some of Vienna's most exciting restaurants have opened around Yppenplatz. Crunchy vegetables, fresh fish, exotic spices and fair prices, combined with the multicultural activities on the Yppen Market ensure a creatively relaxed atmosphere.

Café C.I. was one of the first restaurants to open at Yppen Market, which has existed since 1897. It quickly became a meeting place for people from all over the world, while the area in front of it became a summery garden for guests. Since then, one restaurant after another has opened at Yppenplatz. A very pretty coffee house called Cay (short for: Café am Yppenplatz) has also set up shop right next door and also offers good cake - just like Café Frida one door along. The restaurant Speisen ohne Grenzen (Meals Without Borders) is a non-profit organization. This is where refugees come to cook dishes from their home country.

Across, the piazza, the gaze drifts to the trendy meeting place An-Do. Lots of glass, simple modern architecture, good service and a tried and tested culinary offering define this restaurant. The Pizzeria Sofi next door offers great pizzas with unusual toppings. The former market office in the middle of Yppenplatz is now home to the Paradice Board Game Bar – a paradise for dice fans. There are more than 1,200 games here to choose from and a selection of 18 Ottakringer beers on the menu.

The Wirr am Brunnenmarkt is a sister restaurant to the restaurant-club of the same name on Burggasse. Am Brunnenmarkt offers international cuisine and is the only restaurant to have a roof terrace on a market stall - with a view of the colorful hustle and bustle of the market as well as cool music. Mani focuses on a modern interpretation of Middle Eastern cuisine.

The Truksitz vinotheque and wine bar invites passers-by to enjoy a glass of wine in a cozy atmosphere. The wine bar focuses on Austrian wines, including, of course, those from its own vineyard in Burgenland and wine from Viennese vintners. At La Salvia, the focus is on delicacies from Trieste and Istria, be they pasta, sausage or wine. Inside this market stand are a few seats - in the summer a sidewalk café is added.

Along the Yppenplatz is Wetter, a former launderette, which Raetus Wetter has turned into one of the most exciting new restaurants in the city. He integrated visual defects into the concept, laid a rubber floor and installed a bar in an industrial design. But the most important part is the cuisine: Wetter cooks Ligurian food, in a way that is rarely found north of the Alps. The Dolce Lago also specializes in Italian cuisine.

A classic is the Restaurant Kent, whose traditional Turkish fare and large garden attracts not only card-playing Turks but also the young “in-crowd”. Sanny & Michi is the name of a bar on Yppenplatz that focuses on classic Viennese cuisine.

If you're taking a stroll around Yppenmarkt, you should also visit Staud's Pavillon. It is the little "jewelry box" of the traditional Viennese company, where over 220 types of sweet and finely sour delicatessen are on display and can be tasted as the mood takes you.
