What does “Mitlin” mean?

There’s an interesting story behind the name, and I think it helps to illustrate what Mitlin Financial is all about.

Mitlin Financial is named in memory of my wife’s grandfather, Mitchell, and my mother, Linda.

My mom is more than just the “lin” in Mitlin – she is the reason I do what I do. As a teen, I watched my parents struggle with their finances as my mom battled breast cancer for more than a decade, and this became the driving force that led me on my journey to founding Mitlin Financial.

I was also inspired by the story of Mitchell, though I never met him. But I’ve heard countless stories about his giving nature and willingness to lend an open ear.

When I was forming Mitlin Financial, I thought a lot about these two people who, remarkably, passed away within hours of each other.

I feel that they embody so many of the qualities we want to have in our firm, and to this day, we keep their stories in mind and strive to bring the values they exhibited to everybody we work with.

What is the Mitlin Money Mindset™?

Mitlin Money Mindset™ is our podcast where we help make complicated money topics a little easier to understand – while also asserting the importance of bringing yourself joy every day. You can hear more of the Mitlin story in Episode 1 of the Mitlin Money Mindset™.

What makes Larry and Mitlin different from other advisors?

During my more than 20 years in financial services, I’ve found there are a lot of industry terms and concepts that can seem confusing to outsiders. In many cases, they’re actually not that hard to understand when explained correctly, and that’s why I work with those we serve to break down complex financial topics into easy-to-understand concepts. I want to make sure they understand the tailored financial plan being laid out for them.

Today, I lead the planning and asset management services at Mitlin, in addition to focusing on business development.

Why does Larry seem familiar?

I’ve been featured on many major news outlets, I am a frequent speaker at industry conferences and I regularly film the firm’s “Mitlin Minute” videos that provide important information on relevant financial topics. I host the Mitlin Money Mindset® podcast and I am the author of the Amazon Best Selling book “Financial Planning Made Personal.” I have received several industry recognitions, including being named a 2019 finalist for the Invest in Others For Community Service Award for my work in the mental health space. I was also included on the Long Island Business News “40 Under 40” list, which recognizes distinguished professionals who give back to the community, and received a 2017 Top Financial Executive Award. I am honored to have been recognized by ThinkAdvisor as a LUMINARIES 2022 Finalists in the Thought Leadership Individuals Category. And I am incredibly proud to have been named to the Investopedia 100 Top Advisors in 2021, 2022, and 2023. It is a true honor to be on this list with so many working to make an impact in the industry.

What about education and experience?

I earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Binghamton University before entering the financial services industry in 1996. Helping the families we serve pursue (and even set higher reaching) financial goals continuously inspires and energizes me.

Today, I am proud to serve the second and third generation families. I’ve seen firsthand how strong financial habits, instilled in parents, children and grandchildren, can impact a family’s wealth and wealth stewardship for generations.

What does Larry do outside of work?

Outside the office, I am passionate about raising awareness for mental health. I spent more than 12 years on the National Board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and sit on its financial and investment committees. With my wife, Denise, we have raised more than $1.7 million for the organization through the Keith Milano Memorial Fund. The fund was created at AFSP in memory of my brother-in-law

I am a huge hockey fan! I still play ice hockey, usually in charity games and both my boys play as well.

It’s my love of the game and passion to give back each month that compels me in hockey season to run a contest called “What Rink is Larry At?” on my social media channels.

You guess the rink and tag your favorite charity and the winner gets a donation made to their charity!

I value my family tremendously, and my desire to do right by my wife and sons drives who I am in and out of the office.

Remember to ask yourself “What did you do today that brought you joy?®”
