FAQ's

Where does Montreal Steak Seasoning come from?

This is a Canadian steak seasoning. According to Wikipedia this flavorful seasoning mix originated in Canada and is used to bold flavor grilled meats.

How long will this spice mix last?

Properly sealed the mix will easily last two years. Store it in a sealed container in your spice cabinet.

Using Montreal Steak Spice

This is a great choice for a dry rub. After bringing the steak or meat to room temperature, coat the beef lightly with oil and rub the spice mix into the protein.

Add just prior to grilling. If the steak seasoning sits on the protein for a long length of time the salt in the mix will dry out the meat.

Why make your own Montreal Steak Seasoning?

I love that you can personalize the seasoning! Too spicy? Omit the red pepper flakes, want to lower the sodium? Omit the salt. You can totally make this your own!

Making your own spice mix will save money and time.

No preservatives!

Homemade Montreal Steak Spice tastes so much better than store-bought!

👍 Tips

  • Use fresh herbs and spices.
  • Store in a sealable jar or bag, keep in the pantry or spice cabinet.
  • For great prices on spices and seasoning, check the ethnic markets or aisles of the grocery store!
  • To minimize the mess, add the steak seasoning recipe to a plastic bag, then add the protein and massage it into the meat!

If you're looking to grill steaks, use this rub.

Variations

I'm a big fan of making your own blend of spices; it's the best way to customize the flavors. When you make your own homemade version you can make a large or small batch of seasoning or customize the flavors.

If you like spicy, heat it up with a pinch of cayenne pepper. Too much salt, or you're watching your salt intake, use less! If you have whole spices, use a spice grinder. The options are yours!

Storage

This will keep up to 6 months. Store in a mason jar, an old empty spice jar or an airtight container. Keep in the pantry. It's great to give as gifts as well!

It doesn't get any easier than that, right? Use it to season steak, pork, seafood or chicken.

If you're looking for a great DIY gift to give Dad for Father's Day, this would be easy for the kids to make for him!

  1. Noni

The ingredients in the accompanying video for this recipe is different from what is listed in the printed recipe.
The video calls for 1 tablespoon (not teaspoon) onion powder and 1 tablespoon cumin (not coriander).
    Which is correct?

I misspoke in the video Noni, my apologies! Go with the printed recipe. When I first started doing video I would get so flustered. I apologize for that. I'll correct it in the next few weeks. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

I made this recipe for seasoning and didn't realize how spicy it was is there anything I can do to make it not so spicy?

      Reply

      • Bowl Me Over

Hey Vanessa - I'm sorry this is too spicy for your pallet! To make it less spicy I would add all of the ingredients except black pepper and red pepper flakes. Essentially you're doubling the recipe but eliminating the heat. Mix it up well and you should be set.
